You just can't seem to escape metal bands nowadays that feature a hardcore screamer on vocals who isn't afraid to show his sensitive/melodic side for the chorus, a guitarist who specializes in rubbery riffs, and a drummer who was raised on Slayer-like rhythms. With their 2006 debut, Prey for Murder, you can now add Speakers for the Dead to the ever-growing list. Beginning life as a gothic hardcore band (under the name Gryp), the Fresno, California-based quartet's role models are obviously Pantera as they unleash all their pent-up anger throughout the album. This sonic approach is especially evident on such rage rockers as the album opening "Finally," "No Wrong," and "Pest," while they reach their most melodic on the mid-album epic "Long Way." Prey for Murder is the perfect soundtrack for angst-ridden teens who have the weight of the world on their shoulders.
