Following the dissolution of Spacemen 3, Pete Kember (a.k.a. Sonic Boom) stuck with his original vision for minimalist psychedelia, while Jason Pierce (a.k.a. Jason Spaceman) expanded on the sound to create something huge and orchestral under the name Spiritualized. Building on Pierce’s contributions to Spacemen 3’s final album, Recurring, Lazer Guided Melodies debuted in 1992 to critical acclaim. “You Know It’s True” opens with Pierce whisper-singing over a blend of acoustic and electric guitars delicately picked under keyboardist Kate Radley’s vintage Vox organ tones. This bleeds into the strobe-light guitar delay of “If I Were with Her Now,” where layered horn arrangements and a string trio introduce Spiritualized's panoramic sound. Both “I Want You” and “Run” tap into The Velvet Underground’s penchant for turning sonic oscillations into rock ‘n’ roll (the latter referencing lyrics from J.J. Cale’s “They Call Me the Breeze”). Even though Spiritualized has since gone through numerous lineup changes, the album’s epic “Shine a Light” remains a live staple.
