The Austin, Texas duo of guitarist-pianist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno have been together since 1994, and have slowly learned to create a singular, identifiable sound that's much larger than the garage-rock minimalism of most recent dynamic duos. They've evolved with a dark dramatic game of songwriting that relies on ominous pounding chords, stretches of instrumental dissonance, and a stiff funk that threatens to run off the track. Their fifth album, Gimme Fiction is a strong follows up 2002's breakthrough, Kill the Moonlight. "I Turn My Camera On" sports a mock falsetto from the Jagger-Beck school of vocal affectation, while "The Beast and Dragon, Adored" imagines what the Fall's Mark E. Smith might sound like if he weren't tone deaf. In the end, Spoon's quirky arrangements add spice, but it's the hummable melodies underneath their tough exterior that worm their way into your subconscious and heart.
