[Edit]Deemed by many critics (and many more fans) to be one of the best alternative rock records of the '00s, Kill the Moonlight was a landmark. Recorded by a band that had mastered its sound (lo-fi swagger, cocksure rhythms, Britt Daniel's mercurial crooning), Moonlight was a commercial and artistic success, catapulting Spoon to the heights of indie rock superstardom. (By 2002 that was no longer an oxymoron, thanks to such phenomena as the success of the all-indie soundtrack to The O.C. and the rise of bands like Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie.) The jaunty slacker anthem "The Way We Get By" was ubiquitous in TV and movies (including The O.C.), but there's so much more to love here: the barrelhouse piano of "Someone Something," the snotty pub-rock Clash vibes of "Small Stakes," the brash beatboxing of "Stay Don't Go," and the rollicking Beatles nod "You Gotta Feel It." Moonlight injected strutting grooves into a genre known for staring at its feet. It enticed the wallflowers onto the dance floor and showed them how to get down.
