[Edit]Released on CD by the Japanese label DIW (and briefly made available in the U.S. through Columbia), this trio outing with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Ronnie Burrage finds Cowell in typically creative form. Other than "Stella by Starlight" and the leader's "Equipoise," the repertoire (originals by each of the three musicians) is unfamiliar but Cowell's appealing postbop style makes the music both unpredictable and fairly accessible. The performances are stimulating but this Japanese import will be difficult to find.
