One Star's first full-length, Triangulum offers breezy, whimsical Japanese pop that falls somewhere between Takako Minekawa's experimentalism and Sugar Plant's fragile atmospherics. From the funny, funky "The Jelly Is Set!" to the electro-exotica of "South Paradise" and "Silver Sodapop," One Star blends lounge, electronica, and lighter-than-air dream pop into a fizzy sonic cocktail. Delicate, reflective songs like "Metaphoric," and "E.U.R.O.P.A.," and cute, bouncy electronic pieces like "Cyril's Comic" and "Megalomaniac Art" show off the group's range, and the album's title track combines both sides of One Star's sound into their most accomplished song yet. Though One Star's songs are more style than substance, Triangulum is as enjoyable — and ephemeral — as a popsicle in August.
