[Edit]Composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim and librettist John Weidman, who had previously collaborated on Pacific Overtures and Assassins, created a number of versions of the musical that eventually became Road Show — earlier incarnations were known as Wise Guys, Gold!, and Bounce. Based on real-life characters, Road Show is the tale of two brothers, Addison and Wilson Mizner, and their adventures in gold, gambling, real estate, and love. (This recording captures the cast that performed in the show’s run at the Public Theater in New York in late 2008.) The work might not be as ambitious as some of Sondheim’s pieces, but it’s still Sondheim. Road Show isn’t the sort of musical that will have you whistling catchy tunes upon leaving the theater; instead, the listener is treated to songs that are extremely well-integrated and that effectively tell a story that covers a lot of ground. That said, “The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened,” a touching duet for Addison Mizner (Alexander Gemignani) and his lover Hollis Bessemer (Claybourne Elder), is hard to get out of your head.
