Sure to propel him into the lime-light of top contemporary keyboardists, Bach's fourth release is a radio programmer's dream. Whatever your tastes in instrumental music, there will be at least one song here to please your palette. A tour de force of Bach's remarkable versatility, this album keeps a light, pleasant tone throughout its many stylistic transformations. Brazilian jazz lovers will enjoy the frisky rhythms of "Samba School," while smooth jazz fans will be hypnotized by the spacey hollowness of the Korg M1 on "Rain Dance." And for more traditional jazz fans, Bach fills your order with the acoustic improvisations of "Pearl's Baiao." The best cuts here, however, are the pop tunes like "For a Long Time" (written by former Gregg Karukas saxman Gary Meek), and the one Bach dedicates to the L.A. Lakers, "Fast Break." Meek is in top form gliding through Bach's funky keyboard work on these two, which are the most likely to receive crossover airplay. Also worth honorable mention is the sweet as a Pacific breeze "In My Dreams." It's fitting that one of these songs was written with the then-current NBA champion in mind... with these nine tunes, Steve Bach has indeed achieved pure magic.
