[Edit]On this intriguing set, altoist Steve Coleman performs concise versions of 11 originals, utilizing funky rhythms in creative ways and emphasizing colorful ensembles. The music is not as abrasive as some of his earlier M-Base sets — there is no rapping and the only vocalizing is a wordless spot for Cassandra Wilson. In addition to Coleman, the key voices are keyboardist Andy Milne, guitarist David Gilmore, electric bassist Reggie Washington, and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith. The music is quite original yet fairly accessible due to the rhythms. Recommended.
