Mark "Stew" Stewart and his musical/romantic partner Heidi Rodewald put together the Tony Award–winning musical Passing Strange. The follow-up is Making It, which chronicles their life since. It's an adventure. Their romance wandered off course, and success was never what they'd hoped it would be. Stewart's been a master chronicler of his African-American experience in a white man's world, and nowhere is that more hilariously and poignantly detailed than in the Aspen-inspired "Black Men Ski." "Speed" examines the attraction and downfall of amphetamines. "Curse" explores the heartbreak of love's disappearance. While the subject matter and overall narrative has its appeal, the true joy here is Stewart and Rodewald's musical eclecticism, the way they channel the lushness of a movie overture for "Making It" and capture a psychedelic pop and unusual R&B groove for the Rodewald-sung "Love Is a Cult." "Therapy Only Works If You Tell the Truth" throws a touch of The Beach Boys into its sublime soul.
