The 1970s were a very creative period for Rafael Cortijo that sadly did not parallel any mainstream success. Cortijo, in spite if everything, continued to regain the success of his '50s era in any way he possibly could. Curiously, this production offers a well-balanced selection of assorted genres: bolero, guaguancó, bomba, and merengue. It seems more to acquiesce with an audience than to present any particular style; in any case, excellent Cortijo brings her energy and charm to all cuts: "Songoro Consongo" is an interesting version of the Eliseo Grenet classic (Héctor Lavoe would record it, with greater acceptance, a year later); "Bomba Merengue" is the group's answer to a new trend in their comeuppance; and "Mapeyé" is Cortijo's approach to Puerto Rico's national dances. There is at times a feel of routine in the band's performance; a small caveat in an effort that is worth the attention. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr., Rovi
