Although The Sunday Manoa had existed since the mid-'60s, their lineup wasn't steady until it consisted of Robert Cazimero, Roland Cazimero, and Peter Moon. In 1969 this lineup released Guava Jam, catching everyone by surprise with their brand of "contemporary Hawaiian folk music." The group stayed true to the traditions while branching out with new styles and new arrangements. This album is known for the songs "Kawika" (originally an ancient hula written for King David Kalakaua), "Only You," "Heha Waipi'o," "Mehameha" and the elegnant, instrumental title track (although anyone who has ever bought it has his/her own personal favorite). Over twenty years later, it still sounds as "contrary " as it did back then. Original vinyl version contains the lyrics and English translations for some of the songs, the current pressing of the CD omits them but does include the original liner notes.
