Most people saw Susan Boyle via the internet when her magic moment went viral, setting an online record for being watched over 100 million times in nine days. In that epic performance, the then 48- year-old Scotish woman took the world by surprise, making everyone feel both elated and disappointed — elated that such a heavenly voice could come from her and disappointed in ourselves for being so surprised. Boyle’s debut album I Dreamed a Dream is simply stunning. Here she confidently and comfortably opens with an exquisite rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses,” this version sounding even more gossamer than the Sundays’ 1992 cover. The title track (her star song) follows sounding much like her televised performance, though now under the studio microscope, every little lovely nuance of her amazingly controlled inflections is audible. She heats up Arthur Hamilton’s “Cry Me a River” and though her Carpenters-esque take on “Daydream Believer” is a bit out of place, Boyle’s cover of Skeeter Davis’ “The End of the World” is alone worth the price of admission.
