Does that include not shoving turkey basters into our ears and squeezing out trance until out eyes fill up with irrepressible rage and we conjure up violent thoughts involving DJs, nipples, and turntables? Actually, this is cute stuff. The Belgian duo of Johan Gielen (aka DJ Don) and Sven Maes (aka DJ Svenson) has used the basic constructions of European trance — think tribal throbs and emotional synths — and have churned out a track of somnambulistic luxury. Gielen's "Essential Dark Mix" is neither, but the original is a rankled crescent shape of stylish trance melodies and squirted basslines. Someday the two of them will learn that while there may be beauty in silence, there's also an art to noise.
