On Feb. 24, 1970, Syd Barrett performed five songs on John Peel's legendary BBC radio show, accompanied by David Gilmour on guitar and organ and Humble Pie's Jerry Shirley on percussion. Just one track—the excellent "Terrapin"—had been issued at this point from Barrett's first solo album, The Madcap Laughs. (It's said that "Two of a Kind" was originally slated for the album, only to be held up due to differing accounts over who wrote it: Barrett or Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright.) Three tunes here would make it to the forthcoming Barrett album in November 1970. The performances are loose but of the highest fidelity. "Gigolo Aunt" and "Baby Lemonade" are two of Barrett's best songs, while "Effervescing Elephant" barely makes it to a minute.
