Is it possible to fall in love in a swarming pit? Taking Back Sunday’s wall of guitars, revealing lyrics and wailing choruses not only make it possible but inevitable. TBS create the kind of explosive, four-on-the-floor hard rock kissed with passionate (but not emo) pop that appeal to both hardened souls and sensitive blog types. New Again spreads the appeal even farther, documenting more of TBS’s awesome power with vocalist Adam Lazzara at his most candid. There are a few changes — the departure of guitarist Fred Mascherino and the addition of Matt Fazzi, a shot at three-part harmonies, a bass solo on “Carpathia” — but the energy is distinctly TBS: pure and primal. “Everything Must Go” appears to be the newest anthem to stack on the TBS woodpile. “Capital M-E” is a not-so-veiled shot at Mascherino (who famously revealed to Newsday the band was “more about cooking food than making music”). “Sink Into Me” is the big single with all upgrades firing on all cylinders. New Again breathe new life into a band ready for its second half.
