Details
[Edit]Guitarists and singers Dave Mies and Aaron Mullan formed Tall Firs in 1990, and this is their debut release. The Tall Firs were obviously influenced by that seminal band, yet don’t sound much like them. Featuring hauntingly beautiful folk-infused music and inspired use of reverb and other guitar effects, the music unfolds slowly and deliberately to reveal some endearingly moody melodies. Merging electric-guitar squeals with gently finger-picked acoustic guitar, the trio does a lot with a little. Drummer Ryan Sawyer (who has played with At the Drive In, the Mekons, and the Fiery Furnaces, among others) adds spare yet powerful percussion that moves in and out of the muddy, murky mix. Part of the reason this album works so well, in addition to the great guitar tones they get, is that they don’t overdo it. Running about three and a half minutes each, the songs are focused and concise and devoid of any needless noodling that could bury a guitar-driven project like this. Devotees of Six Chords of Admittance, Califone, and Low will want to check out this spare, atmospheric gem.
