The New York City singer/songwriter and her co-producer/husband G.E. Smith have created a subtlety more muscular sound than on earlier albums, without ever compromising her winsome voice. The album-opener, "Haley," is radio-friendly, and this is music that deserves to be heard. Just when you think the world doesn't need another version of Paul Seibel's "Louise," Taylor Barton gives it an unexpected south-of-the-border twist. The role-playing on "Code Talk," and the six-minute-plus "Half Moon Bay," are signs that she is stretching herself artistically. This is probably her best album to date.
