On the group's sophomore release, Risk, Ten Shekel Shirt turns up the intensity and delivers an opus filled with strong songs, memorable hooks, and gritty instrumentation. Produced by Brent Milligan (the Elms, the Paul Colman Trio), the disc leans more on an electric vibe then an acoustic one, as did their debut. Songs like the title track groove with the vibe of bands like By the Tree and the Elms, delivering Midwest flavoring via meaty guitars. "This Story" veers into Switchfoot territory, while "February" is a cut eerily reminiscent of Coldplay or Tree63 with its emotional delivery and ethereal musical bed. The tune "Poorest King" was produced by Monroe Jones of Third Day fame. The song is an exercise in lyrical humility as vocalist Lamont Hiebert soars through the disc's strongest vocal track. Risk establishes Ten Shekel Shirt as a band on the move. Each cut builds on the one before, creating a release that is one highlight after another.
