[Edit]As bands and labels continue to search for alternate routes to have their work exposed, it might be wise for people in the field to look at Test Shot Starfish as a prime example. The Los Angeles duo has found ubiquitous exposure via such diverse avenues as BET, ESPN, Activision, and an anti-smoking campaign. Here they finally release a full album, mixing IDM and ambient while drawing from the innovative elements of the Orb, Boards of Canada, and Aphex Twin. Not only does it quickly reel one in, but it remains hypnotic by their use of atmospheric tones and glitchy beats. Sometimes it feels like a lost recording from the downbeat side of the late-'90s electronica craze, but it's sharp enough that this can be overlooked. And even without the duo's visuals to aid you, with enough focus those visuals will be easily imagined, whether you're listening to the spacious "Souvenirs" or the gurgling synth of "In Color."
