Doug Sahm died in 1999 and Freddy Fender in 2006, but the surviving members of The Texas Tornados still found a way to resurrect the spirit of their fallen comrades for a 2010 reunion album, Esta Bueno!. Sahm’s role is taken over by his son, Shawn (who looks and sounds remarkably like his father), while the album also incorporates the last recordings Fender made with the group before his death. Among those songs is “If I Could Only”: the final song Fender wrote and a fitting end to a 50-year career in music. Doug is very much present in spirit. He wrote “Who’s to Blame, Senorita” with Shawn, and his signature Tejano anthem “Chicano” is sung here by Flaco Jimenez, the group’s squeezebox kingpin. From the very beginning, the Tornados were about celebration of family more than traditional album concepts. While other bands' posthumous reformations are often obvious cash-ins, Esta Bueno! feels like an authentic continuation of the group’s core mission.
