[Edit]"Understand, I'm a gentleman," Greg Dulli wails on the muscular title track to the Afghan Whigs' major-label debut, but of course a gentleman never tells, adding just one more lie to the song's laundry list of indiscretions spanning from infidelity to substance abuse. An unrepentant rake reeking of sex, booze, and fear, Dulli is the male id made flesh, and few of his lyrics better articulate the primal urges and desires that dictate his thoughts and actions. This 12" single also includes the Whigs' brilliantly sinister rendition of the Ass Ponys' "Mr. Superlove," which deftly combines Dulli's nicotine growl with an overripe backwoods arrangement. Not since Deliverance has the plucking of a banjo seemed so ominous. A potent cover of James Carr's deep soul cheating classic "The Dark End of the Street" closes the set. Stripped of armaments save for a mournful piano and eerie peals of feedback, Dulli delivers one of his most heartfelt and affecting performances.
