Details
[Edit]The debut by this Boston-based ska band was a solid winner, and the follow-up is only a slight disappointment. All the important ingredients are still here — the tight but loopy horn charts, the slightly off-center sense of humor (one instrumental is called "Doctor Che Guevara," and the album's title track is not only a tribute to the band's hometown, but also a tongue-in-cheek namecheck for a particularly obnoxious Boston-area boutique for suburban punk wannabes) — but nothing quite jumps up and hits you like, for instance, the debut album's cover of "Makin' Whoopee." Still, there are lots of fine songs and great playing, and if this is the Allstonians' sophomore slump, it bodes very well indeed for their future output. Recommended to fans of traditional, horn-heavy, skinny-tie ska.
