Details
[Edit]The Australian Jazz Quartet was comprised of Dick Healey on flute, alto, clarinet and occasional string bass, Errol Buddle doubling on tenor and bassoon, pianist Bryce Rohde, and Jack Brokensha on vibes and drums. With American bassists and drummers added, the unit recorded seven albums for Bethlehem from 1955-58, including this long-out-of-print LP, their first recording. With either Jimmy Gannon or John Fawcett added on bass and usually Nick Stabulas on drums, the group fit perfectly into the West Coast cool jazz feel of the period, often utilizing a flute-bassoon frontline. However, among the 11 standards (which include Debussy's "The Girl With the Flaxen Hair") and a lone original, some hard swinging takes place (Buddle was also a fine tenor soloist), so there is an impressive amount of variety on the date. This intriguing music by a generally forgotten group is well worth exploring.
