[Edit]It's easy to be intimidated by the ridiculously long title, but Babalu's full-length debut really is quite friendly. Another strong release from Sweden's Ultra Wide Band collective, this record teams Babalu (two members of the Sleeping Flies) with other members of the collective, including Jivaro and Biowire. While one may wonder why Babalu would be a necessary addition to a lineup with interchangeable personnel, Hi-Fi Lo-Tech Spaceblues gives Michael Evill and Richard Olson a more experimental outlet. Where the Sleeping Flies sought the electronic dance elements of Primal Scream and the "baggy" scene, Babalu is quick to play with drum'n'bass, jazz, acid house, Krautrock, and breakbeats, something that was first evident on the Just Another Taste compilation. This collection spans five years, so there is a diverse selection of modulations, ranging from laser sounds in "C.I.S." to the cool organ and guitar of "Happiness," which resembles a Doors tune on acid.
