The Bauls are migrant musicians found in Bengal. They are a Buddhist brotherhood who preach freedom from all outward compulsion. They do not have castes, social classes; they have no specific deities, no scriptures or temple. Baul women are unusual in the Indian society; they are considered of the lowest social stratum because they are mendicants, living solely on their music. They live a simple, natural, and authentic life, what they call that of "a man of heart." And this is what their song portray. When performing, they sing songs appropriate to the occasions, the places, and the audience for whom they are playing and singing. They are also considered excellent poets. This release presents three talented Baul singers with their respective ensembles. ~ Bruno DeschĂȘnes, Rovi
