Details
[Edit]Vancouver's Be-Good Tanyas have been on break since 2007, so the two new tunes here ("Little Black Bear" and "Gospel Sons") should encourage long-suffering fans who've been awaiting a sign of life from one of roots-Americana's finest groups. Jolie Holland cowrote "The Littlest Birds" before moving on to a respected solo career, while Frazey Ford, Trish Klein, and Samantha Parton continued their rustic ways together. With harmonies and acoustic instrumentation, their originals sound as authentic as their covers of ancient folk and blues. The tracks here are mostly from their three studio albums (Blue Horse, Chinatown, and Hello Love), each of which is a complete statement on its own. Yet as a summary, A Collection features plenty of highlights. Townes Van Zandt's "Waiting Around to Die" attains a disturbing quiet. Neil Young's "For the Turnstiles" sounds completely natural in the company of the classic blues "In My Time of Dying" and the somber piano ballad "Song for R." Fans of "old-time" music and emotionally resonant folk shouldn't overlook this fine trio.
