[Edit]In the best line on the Beauty Shop's third album, lead singer John Hoeffleur drawls in a snarky deadpan somewhere between Paul Westerberg and Lou Reed, "I wrote 'f**k' on all my clothes/That's the life I chose." That song, "I Got Issues," is key to understanding Yard Sale, because it's the first time in a trio of albums that the Beauty Shop have evinced much of a sense of humor behind the carefully constructed Bukowski-meets-Uncle Tupelo persona. Other flashes of humor flit through Yard Sale, but overall, the same dark Americana vibe, as much Nick Cave and the Handsome Family as Johnny Cash, prevails. Hoeffleur's dour, gruff vocals and the bare-minimum arrangements give the Beauty Shop's music a rough edge that's always been at odds with their name, but on Yard Sale, there's less ugliness for its own sake than before. This still isn't exactly easy listening, but in comparison to the Beauty Shop's assaultive debut Yr Money or Yr Life, Yard Sale is downright accessible.
