Benny Bailey moved to Europe for good after leaving his native U.S. during the 1950s, due to the more conducive atmosphere and the promise of regular work. This session, recorded during the last decade of his life, is a solid effort, with the trumpeter joined by pianist Frank Wunsch, bassist Fritz Krisse, and drummer Clarence Becton. Bailey's playing is comparable to that of Harry "Sweets" Edison, especially in the brisk setting of "Yardbird Suite" and a leisurely, extended "I Thought About You." Vocalist Wayne Bartlett adds his warm baritone to two Duke Ellington pieces, "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" and a breezy take of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." But his best performances are the stunning interpretations of "Prelude to a Kiss" and "I Thought About You," where Wunsch's subtle backing brings out the best in the trumpeter. Highly recommended!
