Details
[Edit]In a sense, The Blasters were to the '80s what Creedence Clearwater Revival was to the '60s: a reminder of the power of raw, rootsy rock 'n' roll at a time when many artists were venturing far from that musical bedrock. Like CCR, The Blasters happened to have a front line with two California brothers: the shockingly soulful singer Phil Alvin and his younger sibling Dave, who handled guitar and songwriting duties. The Blasters is the band's second release but first on a widely distributed label, and it gave The Blasters an introduction to the wider world. The no-frills production here perfectly suits the band's roll-up-your-flannel-sleeves-and-rock approach, as The Blasters barnstorm their way through rockabilly ("Marie Marie"), New Orleans R&B ("Hollywood Bed"), Chicago blues (Sunnyland Slim's "Highway 61"), and more. Not only do they exert dominion over the handful of covers they tackle—between Dave's sharp-eyed songwriting and the band's bluesy muscle—they make some major contributions of their own to the Americana canon.
