[Edit]Every review notes Dukowski was Black Flag's original bassist, from the Keith Morris to early Hank Rollins eras. But the starting place to understanding his music 24 years later is his unconventional work with SWA, Wurm, and October Faction, and his championing of the Minutemen and art-damaged SST acts. The first Sextet LP (as a quartet) was based on his bass and some avant-jazz sax, including reshaping Velvet Underground's "Venus in Furs" and his own murderous Black Flag goodbye, "My War." They're another animal on Reverse; perhaps the title refers to the dominating guitar they'd previously disdained, as Dukowski and wife/siren/singer Lora Norton recruited their son, Milo Gonzalez (hmm, wonder what Milo he's named for?), a budding prodigy. But this is still rock as freeform ‘70s FM radio — proto-metal (Hendrix, Black Sabbath), acid rock, free jazz, Captain Beefheart, and Norton's Grace Slick/Waitresses singing. A counter-culture family band, CDS are unclassifiable, and that's in short supply.
