August & Everything After was released in 1993 and quickly established the group as a formidable classic-rock band with roots in Van Morrison and the Band. Their records were tight and concise affairs, but live the band was known to stretch out like one of their obvious heroes, Bruce Springsteen (whose “Thunder Road” is tucked here into “Rain King”). On September 18, 2007, the band performed the album in its entirety at Town Hall in New York City and this album gives you a front row ticket. The sound is immaculate, the band performances are empathetic and tight and singer Adam Duritz kicks fresh life into these seminal CC tunes. “Round Here” starts things off with the kind of wandering improvisation that made them a must-see live act, as the band find their way into “Raining In Baltimore.” “Omaha” and their huge hit single “Mr. Jones” still evoke the band that brought back the organic touch to rock ‘n’ roll. Charles Gillingham’s Hammond B-3 organ nicely layers the tunes and reinforces the ache of “Perfect Blue Buildings.” A must have.
