On their seventh studio album and first collection of new material since 2008's Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings, Counting Crows sound like a reinvigorated band. Forget trying to make another "Mr. Jones": Wonderland is a joyful exploration of classic styles, expertly executed and whimsically performed. "Palisades Park" is an eight-minute suite that winds through jaunty rock and breezy pop, while "Earthquake Driver" is a soulful nugget that quotes The Beatles (literally). Nodding to everyone from The Grateful Dead to R.E.M. to Thin Lizzy, the album is anchored, as always, by Adam Duritz's canny wordplay: "I need the whites, she gets the blues," he sings on the alt-country "Scarecrow." This sounds like the most fun the Crows have had in years.
