[Edit]If you're looking for a true inheritor of the Band's eclectic roots music, look no further than Professor Louie & the Crowmatix's rousing Over the Edge on Breeze Hill Records. Professor Louie (aka Aaron Hurwitz), a longtime associate of the Band — both as a musician and producer — fronts a formidable cast of talent that can swing all over the Americana map. A cover of Kevin Doherty's "Restless Islands" is pure wistful yet driving country-rock, buoyed by Louie's rootsy vocals, sparkling piano, and Levon Helm pitching in on mandolin. The title track finds the group in bouncing electric blues mode, while Miss Marie Spinosa's rich vocals spur on a rollicking take of Ashford & Simpson's "Runnin' Out" (with a crackin' horn section led by Tom Malone). Louie's Band buddies Rick Danko and Garth Hudson show up as well, with the latter adding his majestic organ runs to an 11-minute version of the Grateful Dead's "Scarlet Begonias" that showcases, among other things, Louie's accordion mastery. Superb, down-home musicianship propels this album throughout.
