One of the most prolific groups to ever step into a recording booth, the Crusaders began their long and storied career as the Jazz Crusaders, debuting with the album Freedom Sound way back in 1961. After dropping 17 albums in less than a decade, they truncated their name, tweaked their sound, and expanded their line-up, adding more electricity to the mix. Released on Bob Thiele's much-loved Blue Thumb label, 1 is a double album that sees them moving further from straight jazz and more into funk/fusion territory, with 12 instrumental selections certain to put some pep in your step. The core group of Wayne Henderson, Joe Sample, Stix Hooper, and Wilton Felder remains as solid as ever, but also benefit from the contributions of Chuck Rainey and Larry Carlton, among others. A great starting point if you're just getting into the group, be sure to check out "Georgia Cottonfield," "Mystique Blues," "Mosadi," and the Carole King cover "So Far Away."
