Greatest Hits collections from groups who were never truly about the “hit single” are interesting endeavors where someone decides to imagine what a band’s most accessible material might be. During their eight years at Capitol Records, the Dandy Warhols recorded a number of fantastic singles such as “Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth,” “Bohemian Like You” and “Godless” that present a band very much ensconced in the alternative rock tradition of banging it out or settling it down with lots of manipulated effects and plainsung vocals with psychedelic black-light effects meeting up with killer song hooks. The band’s completely flipped-out side is kept in check. “Holding Me Up” is the only seven-minute piece and it’s one of endearing introspection. There are several re-mixes from Welcome to the Monkey House that were issued on The Dandy Warhols Are Sound that are subtly different from the originally released versions. But the Dandy Warhols’ career is a game of subtle degrees and anyone who loves deep, vibrating sound and punk-rock chic should find much to ponder under headphones.
