Known as purveyors of a particular bent form of rockmusik, the Dinner Is Ruined start Ray Charles Kinda Party meeting expectations, with a one-two punch of off-kilter bluesy numbers. From there it gets quite a bit more traditional for a couple of numbers — "Fertilizer" seems just like a happy summer pop song, while "Old Grey House" is a more thoughtful and subdued track. Just when you're getting comfortable, though, they mix it up again with a slice of noise followed by a slab of wonko electro-funk. And thus it continues throughout the album, diffusing expectations with the start of each new song, making it pretty hard to hang any definitions on the band. Fans of eccentric and eclectic pop should find a lot to enjoy here. (Special note: the album artwork features photographs related to the forced dismantling of the Gas Station Studio, which was co-owned by vocalist/instrumentalist Dale Morningstar, and was the location where many well-loved Canadian recordings came to life.)
