The Far West recorded their first album at an American Legion post while the bar was open for business, and this one was recorded at a vintage hot-rod repair shop. It’s in keeping with a naturalism that informs all the band’s work, where an alt.country sound is expanded by songwriting that’s plenty strong with setting the scene. Producer Colin McLean is only following the band’s instincts by picking unusual places to record. It’s perfectly in line for a band with singer/guitarist Lee Briante of New York’s Hudson Valley, bassist/singer/mandolinist Robert Black, Chicago native guitarist/singer Aaron Bakker, keyboardist James Williams, and drummer Travis Popichak. Together, they hit the honky-tonk on “Words from a Letter,” explore Hollywood with a touch of Bakerfield for Briante’s “On the Road,” visit Briante’s home for “Hudson Valley," and nab a slice of “Minnie the Moocher” on “Leonard,” their tribute to the folk artist who built the famed Salvation Mountain in the California desert.
