[Edit]Live at Barbès is a very unusual set, as eccentric as its instrumentation. The opening "Tent Song," which has the band purposely playing out of tune, gives one low expectations, but the other selections are much more listenable. The music overall is cinematic, dramatic, falls between jazz and third stream, and has improvisations that follow naturally from the arrangements and vice versa. While the individual pieces and solos are rarely memorable, the music continually keeps one guessing while feeling unified. Overall, this set is definitely unique and full of chance-taking although ultimately logical. Worth checking out.
