Details
[Edit]The Best of Dorothy Love Coates & the Gospel Harmonettes includes fourteen of the final sides Coates recorded with her group — now including Dylan/Springsteen singer Cleo Kennedy — in Nashville in 1968-1969. It includes arguably the greatest of all her civil rights-oriented songs, "The Separation Line," and a tremendously moving rendition of "God Shall Wipe Away All Tears" that makes up what it lacks in finesse with some potent staccato embellishments. "Heaven, I've Heard So Much About It" is sufficiently rousing to raise the spirits of the dead. While not at the same level as her masterful Specialty recordings, this is further evidence why Dorothy Love Coates ranks as one of the greatest singers in American history. Opal Louis Nations contributes very solid notes.
