[Edit]With experimental keyboardist Tom Constanten an official member of the band, the Dead continue the adventures of Anthem of the Sun with a more disciplined writing style that would come to a natural fruition on Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. Sixteen-track recording studios were made available at this time, allowing higher fidelity for this ever-expanding crew. Jerry Garcia and lyricist Robert Hunter handled the writing, with Phil Lesh adding key contributions to the fan favorite "St. Stephen." "What's Become of the Baby" uses an electronically enhanced vocal take that's more effective on "Rosemary," a gorgeous snapshot of the band's emerging acoustic side. "Mountains of the Moon" settles for a straightforward acoustic performance, while "Dupree's Diamond Blues" adds trippy keyboard lines to its acoustic lineup. Another live favorite, "China Cat Sunflower," makes its studio debut here, without being connected to "I Know You Rider." (That combination is on Europe '72 and was often expected to be heard that way live.)
