With the legendary Ry Cooder producing and supplying slide guitar, Petra, Rachel, and Tanya Hayden—daughters of legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden—sat around a single microphone in Tanya’s living room and recorded this stunning debut album. Ricky Scaggs plays mandolin on three tracks, Rene Comacho handles the stand-up bass, and Ry’s son Joachim Cooder lays back on the drums. But it’s the sisters’ harmonies that hold these classic songs together. Country legend Webb Pierce, who charted in the days of Hank Williams and George Jones, has his early hit “Slowly” given a chilling performance. Bill Monroe’s “Voices from On High” captures their Appalachian-style talents, while The Louvin Brothers’ “When I Stop Dreaming” and “My Baby’s Gone” feature glorious harmonies that these triplets augment with their additional voice. Cooder’s production is outstanding. You can hear the room, creating the feeling that you’re sitting next to them in the circle, experiencing a time when families sang together for their entertainment. We’re blessed to be invited over.
