The Curse of the Higsons was one of the more interesting style experiments to emerge out of the meta-scene of English post-punk new wave. Unfamiliar chord changes and lyrical themes were awkwardly rammed against more familiar elements like dancehall, funk, and primitive hip-hop. It helped that Charlie "Switch" Higson sang differently every other song and Simon Charterton's drumming fell apart like rhythmic spillage, and both underpinned the New Orleans vibe and seemingly accidental sprigs of brass. The total effect was a kind of proto-Cardiacs pseudo-chaos, but too concerned with itself to really join the ranks of the genre's forward-looking leaders.
