It took this Harlem trio two decades to make their debut album, 1990's In the Spirit. This follow-up came just a year later, but it has the same energetic soul, instrumental command, and pure heart. The Brothers - Sherman and Wendell Holmes and Popsy Dixon - reveal their entire musical spectrum here, starting with the gospel harmonies of the Sam Cooke title track. They roll through the funky R&B original "I've Been a Loser," the protean rocker "High Heel Sneakers," and a revival tent take on Hank Williams' "I Saw the Light" complete with keening pedal steel guitar. The album ends with a smoldering version of the Ray Charles associated "Drown in My Own Tears" that's built around guitarist Wendell's rasping voice, a husky growl that's perfectly balanced by drummer Dixon's sweet tenor and airy falsetto.
