[Edit]Curtis Mayfield was one of popular music's most important figures throughout the '60s and '70s; it's impossible to summarize his extensive career with just one collection. However, this is a wonderful place to start. Aside from having a smooth and soulful voice, Mayfield was an accomplished songwriter. It's his writing that made his work (both with The Impressions and as a solo artist) the incredible experience it was. This set starts with the sweet and light "Gypsy Woman" and a number of gorgeous early R&B tunes that show influences in gospel and doo-wop, such as "Never Let Me Go" and "Little Young Lover." The majestic "Keep On Pushing" and the inspirational "People Get Ready" signal Mayfield's interest in the social issues that would dominate his early-'70s work. Interested parties should seek out the releases Curtis, Roots, and Superfly for further immersion in this musical genius' work.
