[Edit]As its title indicates, Trance Groove offers moments of free-floating dreaminess, transporting the listener into a jazzy stratosphere. But guitarist/band leader Julien Kasper isn’t content with creating meditative soundscapes on this eclectic instrumental project. Kasper (who also teaches at Boston’s renowned Berklee College of Music) is a protean player who tips his hat to everyone from Jeff Beck to Jimi Hendrix and Wes Montgomery over the course of these tracks. On tunes like “The Bumpus” and the title number, his swooning, liquid guitar lines achieve a softly mesmerizing effect. At the oppose pole are “Trash Day” and “Milk Truck,” filled with abrasive riffage and crunchy rhythmic backup. Kasper meanders with cool authority on “The Reverend” and slides into smooth funk-fusion on “Chupacabra. The acoustic “Abyssinia” and the quietly electric “Carolina Rose” provide the album’s loveliest moments. Drummer Zac Casher and bassist Jesse Williams lend fluent backup, augmented by such guest stars as organist T Lavitz. A trip to jazz excellence.
