[Edit]Thank God for microphones and amplification, for these tall, handsome New Yorkers sung softly. With the right songs, however, their smooth, silky harmonies made wonderful, romantic sounds. The delicious "I'm Better Off Without You" did well in New York area. It was so nice they recorded it twice; an earlier version appeared on another label. A carefully crafted rendition of the Impressions' "I'm So Proud" found audiences across America, as did "Spinning Around," their best from this era — the floater features sweet harmonies soaring against swirling strings. For some reason, the Main Ingredient's producers used excessive strings that marred their recordings. A starker setting spotlighting their eloquent blends was the answer. This is especially true of "Magic Shoes," an attempt at pop, which is more annoying than likeable. An update of Bread's "Make It with You" works better. One of the group's best.
