Recorded and released not long after their best album, 1989's The Mekons Rock 'n' Roll, this four-song EP is both an appendix to and the evolution of the Mekons wide-ranging survey of the ever-growing rock & roll landscape of which they're part disciples, part students and all enthusiasts (and which they dramatically lifted to an almost spiritual level on Rock 'n' Roll). With F.U.N. '90 they peruse Americana (their delicate take on the Band's "Makes No Difference" rings with just as much authenticity as the original version), as well as traditions closer to their British home ("Sheffield Park"). And leader Jon Langford's exploration of more flexible musical palettes begins to congeal here, taking the post-punk ballast of their best work to places that require a bit more subtlety. That he and his bandmates pull it off so eloquently is testament to the Mekons' and F.U.N. '90's dynamism. [Blast First/Mute reissued the CD in 2003.]
