40 Years of MJQ was to be a special concert in 1992 by the Modern Jazz Quartet, though drummer Connie Kay's extended illness necessitated the services of Mickey Roker. But rather than just hearing the group, pianist/arranger John Lewis added a string section for this performance, with the selections leaning more toward a Third Stream nature, unfortunately shortchanging audiences wanting to hear vibraphonist Milt Jackson's bluesy works. As a result, the focus is more on Lewis' charts than improvising. Things finally loosen up a bit, especially in the famous "Adagio" movement from JoaquĆn Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjues" and Lewis' "A Day in Dubrovnik Suite." This well photographed and edited DVD has excellent sound and will be of interest to fans of the Modern Jazz Quartet.
