Like The Everly Brothers, The Louvin Brothers, or even The Kinks' Dave and Ray Davies, the brothers Thom and Greg Moore can at times make a magical third voice pop out from their tightly interwoven vocals. Their 2001 debut album, Colossal Small, abounds with those otherworldly sibling harmonies, but it’s also rich in songcraft and musicianship. With drummer Andrew Borger (Norah Jones, Sean Hayes, Anaïs Mitchell) and Carol Kaye protégé Jon Erickson on bass, the opening “Harry Lion” plays with the chemistry of a seasoned band. Thom and Greg braid their voices into heady melodies with lyrics that paint surreal imagery. The piano ballad “Moleslica” features Etienne de Rocher on the ivories, over which Thom sings a stripped-down love song so powerful that it'd sit well on a mix alongside The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows.” The slightly '60s-flavored standout “The Humans Will Take Care” features a full band and some of the album's catchiest melodies. A few of those vintage tones extend into “The Outsiders,” which brilliantly contrasts a sullen melody in the verse with a groovy chorus.
